PREFACE
In the end of the matter, or as the French put it, enfin de compte, there are many preliminaries; but when it comes, there is one end. There are many blessings, but there is one curse; there are many intimations of grace, declarations of comfort, but there is one consummation for belligerence indomitable, and that is getting what you ask for, which is to be left on your own by your own Creator, which is a lonely insufficiency and a forlorn finish.
When death comes to man, there is One who has come back to tell us what He ALREADY knew, since He had been with His Father before this temporary, intemperate, grouchy, insistent and not entirely persistent world of ours had so much as been formed. It is so hard for man to realise that he is not the beginning and the end of all creation in ANY sense, and that his ludicrous struttings and empty mouthings of inept hypotheses, clear of all reason, do not give any ground to stand on, merely showing the emptiness of his void.
The feeling of the meaningless is a symptom of our Age, and a predictable force from the farce man creates for himself in his nescient negligence before His Maker, formulator and Institutor.
The word of the Maker is quite clear, uniquely valid and verified in all departments despite the passing of thousands of years; the way of life it prescribes is equally clear since children can and often do understand and ACT on it. The life beyond the crypt is what matters in the end, since it is like the final examinations in a degree course. It does not matter too much what you did in the earlier years, if you fail this. It is not that the earlier years do not matter; but they do not COUNT if you fail in the end.
There is more to learning than a degree, of course; but if you see the analogy, the final examination for man spiritually is your own relationship to TRUTH. Since God is the only possible truth, and has exhibited this in ways so appallingly obvious that one can only tremble for disbelief, and the creation of those shadowy non-existent goddy things that man so loves to formulate and make, as if to play God with impudence, and then to worship, this comes down to the Holy Writ, the script before the crypt, the way before the end on this earth. It is here and that not surprisingly, that the way to the face of God can be found.
If even an earthly majesty does not expect people to call casually at the Palace and have an immediate cup of tea or other, with the sovereign, how much less can fallen man in the writhings of his twenty first ... not birthday, but century this time - expect to have discourse, yes and blessed destiny from God, without heeding the protocol.
In this case, the protocol is propositional, diagnostic and remedial. BEFORE you can have an interview at all, you MUST submit to the truth, acknowledge your need of it, and being grateful for the pardon provided and TAKE IT. In so doing, of course, you need to credit God, which is far easier than for anyone to credit you, since all men are sinners to the heart, and this is as far from wise as the East from the West.
It is only then, and the Word of God is that script, first in writing, and then in Person presented as man, it is only when this occurs, that you can come to see the face of God and live for ever.
Otherwise, it is inflammation of the spirit, and conflagration: including that promised for Rome in Revelation 17-18 as the ruler of some one sixth of the world's population (at least in form) meets here come-uppance for playing God by increasing His word with its own, and its own importance and making bread into God and a man into the mouth of the God whose word is as finished as His Gospel, these millenia, as is the Cross and its work. Beyond Romanism, is the next phase equally intended to burn (II Thessalonians 1), and beyond that is the final judgment.
It is comforting to know in the face and light of this that there is light for man that NOTHING can extinguish, alter, mutate or manipulate; for it is not to a Government House Garden Party but to the grace of the eternal God that each one is invited, and the actual Invitation is provided for you within, and it is found in the script, when you accept what is offered. It is not available for gate crashes really, no, not at all. It is here, in the Redeemer provided, Jesus Christ, and in HIM ALONE (Acts 4:11-12), that you find rest, reality and eternity in which your place comes as one of His own.
